Fiction Music has provided musical scores and services for TV, Film, and
corporate clients since 1991. We have worked on shows ranging from “The Nature
of Things” to “For Better or for Worse”, and for such diverse clients as
American Standard and Canada’s Department of National Defence. We are
equally comfortable working with pencil and paper as we are with
state-of-the-art computers and software and have written scores for symphony
orchestra to solo acoustic guitar, from banks of synthesizers to solo voice. Our work usually involves three main areas; music for documentaries and lifestyle TV, music for animation and kid’s TV, and music for corporate and commercial clients. For information on each separate area, as well as relevant links and audio samples, go to the navigation links at the bottom of each page. We thank you for dropping by and hope you enjoy your visit.
To provide the level of service our clients demand, Fiction Music has a complete in-house production, mixing and post-production facility. We often have to provide sketches within hours of a project start so we have a small pre-production suite that our composers start in. From there a project usually progresses to our live-room for the recording and overdubbing process. Subject to client approval, the project then moves to post-production for editing and fine–tuning to picture.
While
we use mostly the stalwart Macintosh, we also find a lot of use for our trusty
Intel platforms. Basically we use an old Mac 9600 in the composition suite
along with several racks of midi sound modules from various manufacturers (like
Roland, Korg, Akai, Emu, Kurtzweil and Alesis), a Mac G5 in the post-production
suites and the IBM-based platforms in the office and duplicating suites. We use
Logic audio for everything but also have Pro-Tools on hand when needed.
Recently we’ve been using Logic software synths, samplers and hardware. In the
composition suites we use lots of outboard gear by TC-Electronics, Eventide and
Lexicon, but in the post-pro-recording suite we use mostly plug-ins from all
sorts of companies. Almost everything is recorded to disk but we sometimes use
the Adat, a Panasonic Dat and our trusty old Studer 2-track. Our mic-locker is
small but has the finer offerings of Neumann, AKG, ATM and Shure. Then there
are the guitars. Currently in use are three Gibsons, two Taylors, two Fenders,
a Godin Multiac, an Ibanez, and a Yamaha bass, going into a Mesa-Boogie, three
Fenders and one really old Ampeg amplifier.
